Philadelphia Skyline
A panoramic view of Philadelphia's skyline showcases the city's tallest buildings.
Graduate Hospital Area
Graduate Hospital neighborhood consists primarily of nineteenth and twentieth-century rowhomes interspersed with corner stores, 22 churches and a few larger architectural landmarks. On the eastern half of the neighborhood is the Scottish Rite affordable housing complex which consists of two multi story apartment buildings that cater mostly to elderly and low income individuals. The former buildings of Graduate Hospital lie on South Street, the northern border of the neighborhood. Along Grays Ferry Avenue is the former Philadelphia Naval Asylum or Navel Home, designed in 1826 by William Strickland. This National Historic Landmark first constructed in 1833, closed in 1976, and is now being developed into cond.
Swann Memorial Fountain
The fountain, by Alexander Stirling Calder designed with architect Wilson Eyre, memorializes Dr. Wilson Cary Swann, founder of the Philadelphia Fountain Society. The Society had been planning a memorial fountain in honor of its late president and founder. After agreeing that the fountain would become city property, the society was granted the site in the center of Logan Circle.
Philadelphia Skyline at Night
A "magic hour" view of the Philadelphia skyline along the Schuylkill River is seen from the southeast. On the right, appears evidence of the skyscraper building boom that occurred after 1987, when a height restriction for Philadelphia buildings was lifted. Prior to that time, architects agreed that no Center City structure would climb higher than the statue of William Penn atop City Hall.
